Dorodango (Mud dumplings)
The ancient Japanese practice of shaping and polishing earth into spheres — becomes in Sewell’s work a contemporary meditation on material, patience, and the unseen connection between earth and spirit.
Stardust (from my back yard), 2023 — a series of hand-sculpted dorodango spheres formed from garden earth, sand and water — was awarded the Gordon Harris Art Supplies Merit Award at the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Awards, 2024, Whakatāne.
